Located
in the Apennine
mountains of Italy,
Imola is in the region
which is home to the
likes of Ferrari,
Lamborghini, and
Maserati.
Nowhere on the
earth is there a place
with such a passion for
racing cars, though it
wasn’t until 1981 that
Imola appeared on the F1
calendar as the venue
for the San Marino GP.
Its designation
as the GP of the little
known (and close by)
principality of San
Marino was done to
secure its place on the
F1 calendar, as the
prestigious Monza had
always held the Italian
GP.
Imola
has been home to a
number a memorable F1
races, though will
always be remembered for the
1994 GP when the
“darkest weekend in
F1” claimed the life
of Roland Ratzenberger
in qualifying, as well
as the Brazilian legend
Ayrton Senna during the
race, signaling the end
of the mighty Tamburello
corner. When a somber F1
circus returned there
the following year, the
corner had been turned
into a slow,
characterless chicane. Yet despite this tragedy, the beautiful rolling hills, great
town atmosphere, and
unparalleled racing
tradition keep drawing
F1 back to Imola every
year.
