Prior
to the 1970’s Formula
1 was not an overly
popular sport in Brazil,
yet after witnessing the
international success of
Emerson Fittipaldi,
Brazil adopted a strong
love for F1 that remains
today.
Brazil’s first
taste of F1 was a
stunning race at
Interlagos in 1975 when
local favorite Carlo
Pace claimed his debut
victory, followed
closely by his
countryman Fittipaldi.
A year later the
Brazilian GP moved to
Jacarepagua in Rio de
Janeiro, and for the
next decade it would
switch back and forth
between the two venues.
When Ayrton
Senna started
to rise, the race moved
back to his home track
of Interlagos, where it
has remained today.
Despite
the enormous popularity
of F1 in Brazil,
many teams and drivers
see Interlagos as the
most undesirable race on the F1
calendar.
Poor track
surface conditions and
inadequately maintained
signs and buildings,
coupled by a very high
crime rate in the
Interlagos area of Sao
Paulo, account for the
numerous complaints.
Improvements must
be made by race
organizers or the FIA
may look to relocate it
elsewhere.
