Lorenzo Bandini was unquestionably the most talented Italian driver during the 60's.  After a stint with saloon cars, he moved up to Formula 1 by the 1961 season with the Scuderia Centro Sud team in a Copper-Maserati.  Over the next five seasons he would see sporadic appearances for Ferrari, winning the 1964 Austrian GP as well as the Le Mans 24 hours race while on hiatus from Grand Prix racing, until the 1966 season when he finally became the team's number one driver.

The 1967 season was set to be his most promising season, but in a horrific circumstance he died in his first outing at the Monaco GP.  While running in second place behind Denny Hulme in the closing laps of the race he clipped the barriers and his Ferrari caught on fire.  The inadequately equipped fire marshals eventually got him out of the blazing car, but he died as a result of the burns he had sustained.
